Information on Homeopathic Products

Information on Homeopathic Products

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a holistic, health philosophy and practice. People who specialize in homeopathy are called homeopaths, though other complementary health care professionals also use homeopathic philosophy and products in the treatment of patients. At this time, Ontario is the only province that regulates homeopaths.
Homeopathy is based on the principle of "The Law of Similars" (also known as "like cures like") meaning that a disease and its symptoms can be cured by a product known to produce similar symptoms. Products are intended to be used in low dosages based on the idea that as a homeopathic product is diluted, its healing effect increases.

Homeopathic Products

Homeopathic products come in many forms such as pellets, oral droplets, syrups, creams and ointments. These products are made up of substances that come from plants, minerals, or animals. These products are generally low-risk.
Health Canada regulates homeopathic products as a type of natural health product.
Health Canada reviews homeopathic products to make sure that they are safe and that the health claims (what the product claims to do) are supported by textbooks and other references used in the practice of homeopathy (e.g., pharmacopoeia,Materia medica).

    Did you know?
Health Canada has approved more than 8,500 homeopathic products.
There is a database on the Health Canada website that lists these approved products. You can also enter a product's DIN-HM into this database to learn more details of Health Canada's approval of the product.

Homeopathy helps with Morning Sickness

Morning sickness

How to self-manage it with Homeopathy

As many of you will know from bitter experience, though morning sickness is usually associated with the first trimester, it frequently extends way beyond the twelfth week and is by no means confined to mornings only. As homeopathy is safe for use during pregnancy, there is no need to put up with the symptoms when they get too much.
Before looking at the principal homeopathic remedies for morning sickness, there is a simple trick which many mums to be have sworn by. Keep a dry biscuit by your bedside, and eat it lying down when you first wake up in the morning. Sit up in bed and have a drink of water, then get up. Following this, try to avoid caffeine, and have ginger tea (ginger is an age old cure for nausea) or honey and milk instead. In general, eating and drinking little and often throughout the day is advisable.
In addition to these measures, take the remedy from the list below which most closely resembles your symptoms (under the care of your licensed Homeopath).
Sepia
This is the first remedy to consider when you have nausea at the sight, smell or even the thought of food. Eating or drinking a little alleviates the nausea. The symptoms can be associated with backache, and feelings of being very easily irritated or depressed.
Nux Vomica
The person who would benefit from this remedy would suffer a lot of nausea and retching without much vomiting. They are likely to also be constipated and bloated but be craving caffeine and other stimulants.
Pulsatilla
Nausea for this person will be worse if eating or smelling fatty food. The nausea will ease when out in the fresh air and be worse in a warm stuffy room. The typical Pulsatilla person is tearful and much in need of kindness and understanding.

Homeopathy helps with ENDOMETRIOSIS

Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrial cells. They normally form inside of the uterus, but in this condition they grow outside the womb, usually on other organs of the pelvis, particularly the ovaries and fallopian tubes. These cells are usually shed each month during menstruation.
The symptoms of Endometriosis include painful periods, heavy periods, pelvic pain that is worse during menstruation, ovarian cysts, painful intercourse, painful bowel movements or urination, sickness, constipation and diarrhea, and infertility.

Endometriosis affects women mainly of childbearing age, and the pain and distress it causes can have a significant impact on the ability of the woman to live her life normally, and can lead to depression.

Homeopathic Remedies for Plantar Fasciitis

Homeopathic Remedies for
PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Plantar fasciitis can be an extremely painful condition - "inflammation of the plantar fascia or arch tendon of the foot. It is an overuse injury causing heel pain which may radiate forward into the foot. Plantar fasciitis can also be known as a heel spur although they are not strictly the same".
The Plantar Fascia, or arch tendon, is a broad, thick band of tissue that runs from under the heel to the front of the foot. A rupture can sometimes occur at the origin of the arch ligament and result in inflammation and pain.

Conventional Medical Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Using the NHS Choices website as a guide to the conventional medical treatment of Plantar Fasciitis,  there are a number of treatments that can help relieve heel pain and speed up your recovery. These include:
  • resting your heel – avoiding walking long distances and standing for long periods
  • regular stretching – stretching your calf muscles and plantar fascia
  • pain relief – using an icepack on the affected heel and taking painkillers, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • wearing well fitted shoes that support and cushion your feet –running shoes are particularly useful
  • using supportive devices – such as orthoses (rigid supports that are put inside the shoe) or strapping'.
For some of us, the heel pain resolves within a year, while for others “the above treatments aren’t enough and surgery may be needed to release the plantar fascia.”
"Around four out of five cases of heel pain resolve within a year. However, having heel pain for this length of time can often be frustrating and painful."

Homeopathic Treatment of Plantar Fascitis

Homeopathy does not treat illness or diseases. Instead it treats an individual who has been diagnosed with a particular illness or disease.
As far as Plantar Fasciitis is concerned, homeopathy has highlighted a number of remedies that have been found to be useful in its treatment.

Homeopathic Remedies for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Homeopathic Remedies for

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a narrow band made of fibrous tissue, which gives support to wrist. Through this band median nerve bones and ligaments pass through it . Whenever there is swelling in the tissues of carpal tunnel it leads to the compression of the median nerve and hence the whole syndrome or symptomatology of carpal tunnel syndrome starts to take place, i.e  pain , numbness, weakness and  tingling sensation in hand or fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by variety of factors that lead to repeated trauma to the tissues inside carpal tunnel.

It is quite common to find the carpal tunnel syndrome in people who perform repetitive movements of hands and of wrist.  Carpal tunnel is most common in people who use computers. Typing is one of the most common causes that lead to Carpal tunnel syndrome. Other mechanical jobs that may lead to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome are driving vehicles, sewing, using hand tools ( especially those vibrate – carpenters are at high risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome), writing, piano players and other musical instruments .

Homeopathic Remedies for Carpal tunnel syndrome

The main Homeopathic medicines for treating carpal tunnel syndrome are  Ruta , Causticum , Hypericum and Arnica .

When  to use Homeopathic remedy Causticum for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Causticum ranks the top . The  main symptoms are weakness in hands , numbness and loss of sensation in hands and fingers.
It is more indicated when the  Carpal tunnel syndrome has increased to level where there is excessive weakness in the hands and the muscles of the hand have atrophied . For causticum to be given in a case of carpal tunnel syndrome the palmar side of had should have flattish appearnce ( reduction in musculature of hand ).

Using Ruta as For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Ruta Graveolens is  one of the best homeopathic medicines for  treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome .
It is used when there is tendonitis from overuse of  wrist or after a sudden strain or fracture of the wrist.
Arnica and Hypericum also come in handy when there is an injury relating to the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome .

Homeopathy Relief for Food Poisoning

Homeopathy Relief for Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is  a term used for a gastrointestinal illness caused by eating food that is contaminated with certain types of bacteria, parasites, viruses, or toxins.  The most common type of bacteria responsible for food poisoning are Salmonella, Camplobacter and E-Coli. The viruses that cause food poisoning are astravirus, rotavirus and Norwalk virus(affects shellfish).
The onset of symptoms usually develops within 30 minutes to 48 hours. Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, headaches and in severe cases shock and collapse.  Vomiting and diarrhea are the bodies way of trying to get rid of the toxins as quick as it can.
Food poisoning cases which are not serious generally recover within 3 days, whereas severe cases will require hospital treatment.
Here are some homeopathic remedies to consider for food poisoning or similar gastrointestinal complaints.
Arsenicum: Bad effects of spoiled fish, meat and bad water. Burning pain in abdomen, person feels chilly, restless, anxious, thirsty for sips of water. Vomiting and diarrhea at the same time. Better for warmth and warm drinks, worse from cold drinks and sight or smell of food.
Lycopodium: Bad effects of shellfish especially oysters.
Pulsatilla: Stomach disorders from eating cakes, rich foods, ice-cream, spoiled meats and rotten fish.
Nux Vomica: Bad effects of overindulgence in food and wine, fatty foods, spicy foods and alcohol.  Symptoms of cramps, hangovers, wind, pressure, and vomiting which does not relieve.
Urtica Urens: Ailments from eating shellfish with allergic skin reaction.
China: This it an excellent remedy to help promote recovery after fluid loss which has arisen because of symptoms such as persistent sweating, vomiting, diarrhea causing exhaustion and dehydration.
Rehydration is essential to replace the enormous amounts of fluids lost during food poisoning.
NB: Food poisoning can be potentially life threatening so seek medical assistance if symptoms still persist after 24 hours or you experience continued abdominal pain, blood in the stools, difficulty focusing, double vision, convulsion or paralysis and severe dehydration.
A well selected homeopathic remedy can help speed up the recovery process aiding the body in ejecting the poisons as well as helping with recuperation of exhaustion and rehydration.

Homeopathy Remedies for Head Lice

HEAD LICE (NITS)

A head louse infestation (Pediculus humanus capitis) produces itching and microscopic injuries to the scalp that are caused by the bite of the head louse. Head lice are common in young children, usually picked up from head-to-head contact.
Nits are small insects, about 3mm long, yellowy brown in colour, with white eggs. They live on the scalp, the nape of the neck, and behind the ears, and feed from the host's blood, and lay their eggs close to the root of the hair. They can make the head feel very itchy, and often they can be felt moving in the hair. They were once associated with dirty hair but this is no longer so. An infestation can quickly be passed from child to child within a single classroom.

Homeopathic Treatment of Head Lice (Nits)

Homeopathy is a medical therapy that will avoid some of the side-effects and adverse reactions of conventional medical treatment. Homeopathy is the second most popular medical therapy in the world, and the most popular holistic system of medicine.
Homeopathy can be useful in treating a single infestation, or in recurrent episodes of head lice.

Prevention
For any child who has regular infestations of nits, two remedies are recommended, both effective with children who have a tendency to contract an infestation.
Psorinum
The Homeopathy Information Website recommends that the child is given the remedy, once per week for two months.
Staphysagria
A similar regime to that recommended above is usually sufficient to prevent further infestations. The remedy is described in more detail below.

Treatment
The selection of a homeopathic remedy is based on the individual’s symptoms. As far as head lice is concerned, Homeopathy has highlighted a number of remedies that have been found to be useful in its treatment. These simple remedy pictures give some indication of the types of symptoms they will treat.

Apis - This remedy suits busy, curious, fidgety children who can be jealous and easily angered.

Eucalyptus globulus 1X - This is homeopathic eucalyptus in the lowest potency and treats lice on the body.

Lachesis - This remedy suits jealous children who are very talkative, strong minded and intense. The scalp can be very sensitive and they hate having a haircut.

Lycopodium - When confidence is low and the child is easily overwhelmed by expectations. They may be what is termed a ‘street angel, house devil’. Meek and well behaved when out or at school but bossy and domineering at home and with siblings.

Nux Vomica - Use this for children who have given chemical pesticides for lice removal, which can be dangerous. These children may show lethargy, pallor and dark circles under the eyes, loss of appetite, nausea, and weakness. Nux vomica has been known to act as a detox when the symptoms match.

Pediculus Nosode - Use this under a homeopath's guidance. This is used if your child is infected or if outbreaks are frequent. This remedy is a homeopathic nosode that is actually diluted, potentized made from the louse.

Psorinum Nosode (used for prevention, on exposure of someone in the class or family, given weekly) - Use this under a homeopath's guidance. Psorinum is effective in people who have a tendency to attract head lice. Take a dose of Psorinum 15C once a week for two months.

Staphysagria - This remedy is also known as Larkspur or Lice-bane because of its herbal use in killing body lice. It is used for a person with sensitivity and suppressed emotions. The person with lice also feels ashamed and dirty. They have to suppress their natural emotional reactions. They may also have experienced feelings of shame, guilt or humiliation. Children with a lice infestation will often be bullied or teased or humiliated at school.  They may be victims of abusive or dominating parents. Confrontation is difficult for those who need this remedy, but when they do become angry may tremble, choke on swallowing, stammer or throw things.

Sulphur - A good remedy for warm-blooded children who hate having a bath and washing their hair. They love junk food and are quite lazy and messy.

Homeopathy for Hair Loss

Homeopathic Medicines & Treatments

For Hair Loss

Homeopathy has various treatments for hair loss depending on the cause of the problem. A licensed homeopath studies the case history of a patient in detail so that the root of the problem can be found. Once they have evaluated the cause, suitable homeopathic medicine is prescribed to the patient.

Homeopathic Medicines For Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is the result of an extra-zealous immune system. The immune system mistakes hair for a foreign object and starts to attack it, resulting in hair loss. The following homeopathic medication is specifically designed to treat people with alopecia areata.

Fluoricum Acidum

This medicine is considered excellent for hair loss, especially alopecia areata, where the patient loses hair from spots on the scalp. It is also adept at dealing with the resulting hair fall after a period of sickness, hair breakage, hair fall caused by syphilis, and hair gets tangled a lot.

Calcarea Carbonica

It is often prescribed to patients for whom hair loss is accompanied by intense itching and sweating of the scalp.

Vinca Minor

Vinca Minor is efficient in treating alopecia when it is accompanied by dandruff. It is also used to treat abnormal hair growth i.e. when the hair grows out like white wool.

Homeopathic Medicines For Baldness

While baldness is uncommon in women, there are cases where it happens. In fact, 45% of women start experiencing significant hair loss by the time they reach 50.

Silicea

Homeopaths commonly prescribe Silicea for baldness accompanied with pain. It also treats skin conditions like eczema, which may sometimes cause dandruff.

Baryta Carbonica

This is administered to young people suffering from premature baldness. It is generally used to treat timid people who are experiencing baldness along with throat complaints and issues such as tonsillitis.

Lycopodium Clavatum

This is one of the best homeopathic medicines for preventing a number of hair-related problems. Lycopodium is a wonderful remedy for hair loss, premature graying of the hair, and even baldness. This homeopathic medicine also tackles premature balding.

Homeopathic Medicines For Hair Loss Due To Dandruff

Psorinum

Psorinum is the best treatment for hair loss that is caused due to dandruff. Dandruff is a common result of skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Psorinum tackles the root of the cause, reducing hair fall and dandruff at the same time.

Mezereum

This is another medicine that efficiently deals with conditions of the skin such as rashes, lesions, and psoriasis. It tackles hair fall in people who have crusty scalps and infected scalps with pus. It is also ideal for encouraging hair growth.

Kali Sulphuricum

When the dandruff is yellow in color, Kali Sulphuricum is a good treatment to resort to. It promises great results and is often prescribed by homeopaths to patients who complain of dandruff and hair loss together.

Homeopathic Medicines For Hair Loss In Women After Childbirth

Natrum Muriaticum

It is used to treat a myriad of issues and is perfect for treating post childbirth hair fall. It is also prescribed for hair fall in women suffering from anemia.

Pulsatilla Pratensis

This is administered to women suffering from post-delivery hair loss. The people to whom this medicine is prescribed often report a lack of thirst and a desire for breathing in fresh air. It is also administered to women who have trouble in digesting fatty food.

Homeopathic Treatment of Arthritis

Homeopathic Treatment of Arthritis

Arthritis is caused by a variety of factors.

The individual’s immune system will try to fight it, in order to heal. However, when arthritis becomes a chronic condition, it will have reached the stage when it is no longer able to do so.

Conventional medicine has little to offer arthritis sufferers other than temporary pain relief that does not get to the cause of the pain.

The NHS says:       "There is no cure for arthritis but there are a number of treatments                                                                         that can help slow down the condition’s progress".

Homeopathy seeks to aid and support the body’s own defenses, and to stimulate a person's own healing abilities.  It can be helpful in relieving the pain and stiffness associated with the condition, and can have more to offer in terms of long-term treatment.

There are several homeopathic remedies that can treat arthritis effectively, and some of these are listed below.

With such a difficult, and varied disease, professional homeopathic treatment is strongly recommended, especially if the condition is becoming long-term, and if you are looking for deeper, longer-lasting relief from the pain.

Arnica: Chronic arthritis with a feeling of bruising and soreness. The painful parts feel worse from being moved or touched. (Herbal Arnica gels and ointments may also help to soothe arthritic pain when applied externally to areas of inflammation and soreness)

Aurum met
: Wandering pains in the muscles and joints that are better from motion and warmth, and worse at night. Deep pain may be felt in the limbs when the person tries to sleep, or discomfort may wake the person up. People who need this remedy are often serious and focused on work or career, with a tendency to feel depressed.

Bryonia: This remedy can be helpful for stiffness and inflammation with tearing or throbbing pain, made worse by even the smallest motion. The condition may have developed gradually, and is worse in cold dry weather. Discomfort is aggravated by being touched or bumped, or from any movement. Pressure brings relief (if it stabilizes the area) and improvement also comes from rest. The person may want to move, but has to stay completely still and not be interfered with.

Calcarea carbonica: This remedy may be useful for deeply aching arthritis involving node formation around the joints. Inflammation and soreness are worse from cold and dampness, and problems may be focused on the knees and hands. Weakness in the muscles, easy fatigue from exertion, and a feeling of chilliness or sluggishness are common. A person who needs Calcarea is often solid and responsible, but tends to become extremely anxious and overwhelmed when ill or overworked.

Causticum: This remedy may be indicated when deformities develop in the joints, in a person with a tendency toward tendon problems, muscle weakness, and contractures. The hands and fingers may be most affected, although other joints can also be involved. Stiffness and pain are worse from being cold, and relief may come with warmth. A person who needs this remedy often feels best in rainy weather and worse when the days are clear and dry.

Calcarea fluorica: This remedy is often indicated when arthritic pains improve with heat and motion. Joints become enlarged and hard, and nodes or deformities develop. Arthritis after chronic injury to joints also responds to Calcarea fluorica.

Dulcamara: If arthritis flares up during cold damp weather, or after the person gets chilled and wet, this remedy may be indicated. People needing Dulcamara are often stout, with a tendency toward back pain, chronic stiffness in the muscles, and allergies.

Kali birch: When this remedy is indicated, arthritic pains may alternate with asthma or stomach symptoms. Pains may suddenly come and go, or shift around. Discomfort and inflammation are aggravated by heat, and worse when the weather is warm.

Kali carb: Arthritis with great stiffness and stitching pains, worse in the early morning hours and worse from cold and dampness, may respond to this remedy—especially if joints are becoming thickened or deformed. People who need this remedy often have a rigid moral code, and tend to feel anxiety in the stomach.

Kalmia: Intense arthritic pain that flares up suddenly may responds to this remedy—especially when problems start in higher joints and extend to lower ones. Pain and inflammation may begin in the elbows, spreading downward to the wrists and hands. Discomfort is worse from motion and often worse at night.

Ledum: Arthritis that starts in lower joints and extends to higher ones may respond to this remedy. Pain and inflammation often begin in the toes and spread upward to the ankles and knees. The joints may also make cracking sounds. Ledum is strongly indicated when swelling is significant and relieved by cold applications.

Pulsatilla: If the arthritis pain is changeable in quality, or flare-ups move from place to place, and gentle motions relieves the pain, this remedy may be useful. The symptoms (and the person) feel worse from warmth, and better from fresh air and cold applications. People who need this remedy usually are emotional and affectionate, sometimes having tearful moods.

Rhododendron: This remedy is strongly indicated if swelling and soreness flare up before a storm, and continues until the weather clears. Cold and dampness aggravate the symptoms. Discomfort is often worse toward early morning, or after staying still too long. The person feels better from warmth and gentle motion, and also after eating.

Rhus tox: arthritis, with pain and stiffness that is worse in the morning and worse on first motion, but better from continued movement, may be helped with this remedy. Hot baths or showers, and warm applications improve the stiffness and relieve the pain. The condition is worse in cold, wet weather. The person may feel extremely restless, unable to find a comfortable position, and need to keep moving constantly. Continued motion also helps to relieve anxiety.

Ruta grav: arthritis with a feeling of great stiffness and lameness, worse from cold and damp and worse from exertion, may be helped with this remedy. Tendons and capsules of the joints can be deeply affected or damaged. The arthritis may have developed after overuse, or from repeated wear and tear.

There are many other remedies, and as always with homeopathy, it is important to match the right remedy with the right person.
